Hi! This is Ariel from Confident Business English. This video is the first in a series relating to “Business Idioms”.
So what are “Idioms” and why are these so
important for you to know?
Well first of all, an “Idiom” is an expression whose meaning is different from the words in the expression itself. And the reason that this is so important for you to learn is because if you are having a conversation with a native English-speaking colleague and they use an idiom you might find yourself completely lost. Another good reason to learn idioms is because when you use an idiom yourself, you demonstrate your high level of English and it also helps you become more confident with your English as well.
So the first expression that we are going to learn is “Across the board”. Let me give you an example of across the board in a sentence, “Since the merger of the two companies, there have been changes to salaries across the board” so what does that mean there have been changes to salaries across the board? What that means is, is that salary changes have been made for everybody in the company whether it be executives or upper management, lower management, or just the lower level employees. So that’s what across the board means. It means pertaining to everything, relating to everything.
So where is the origin of this idiom, meaning where does it come from? How did this all begin? Well the idiom “Across the Board” actually comes from the world of horse racing. You see, in the old days they used to write the bets, they used to write people's bets on blackboards. So for example, when you place the bet on a horse, you could bet that it would come in first, second, and third place. And if you decided to bet first, second and third place then they would mark on the blackboard first, second, and third place and that would mark you “Across the Board”. So that’s what the idiom “Across the Board” means.
